Introduction Blog Post

Hey guys!

My name is Mary Nguyen. I was born in Houston, Texas, but I grew up in Plano, Texas, which is a city right outside of Dallas. Right after my freshman year of high school, I moved back to Houston to live with the rest of my immediate family. There are five members in my family: my dad, my older brother, my younger brother, and my sister. I lost my mom when I was three years old, so I do not really remember much about her, but I have heard a lot of good things about her. A lot of times I wonder how different my life would be if my mom was still alive.

I tell myself often that if you put your mind to something and believe in yourself to do that one thing, then you can go far in your life. You can accomplish your goal, no matter how many times you have failed to do so. But if you do not believe in yourself or keep a positive mindset, or you tell yourself that you are not capable of doing that one thing, it is a great possibility that that negative mindset interferes with you actually accomplishing your goal. Just because you are not believing in yourself. Just because you are not pushing yourself hard enough.

Some things I enjoy doing are cooking and baking. When we were told to quarantine, I put my time to use by looking up recipes and getting creative. Before COVID, I was decent at cooking and baking, but I started to engage in those activities more as I was trying to figure out what to do with so much free time. I wish I had more time to cook and bake for my family, but when college began, I guess I could never really find the time to do those things. Since I have started college, I have rarely had any free time for myself.

Something I have been worrying about recently is what I really want to be when I get out of college, and what classes I am studying for my future occupation. I want to become a physician assistant, and I know it is a lot of work, but I wonder if that is something I really want to do, if that is really what I want to keep doing for the rest of my life. It is not exactly the same when you are asked as a child what you want to be when you grow up, because as a child, you have a lot of time to figure out what you like and what you want to explore. But now, as a college student, the clock is ticking, time is running out and you have to figure out what you want to do, and quickly. And it especially sucks when you may end up wasting a semester or even a year on classes you may end up not needing to graduate with a degree.

Anyways, that is a little something about me!

  1. Hi Mary!
It was lovely getting a little peak into your life! I completely agree with what you said - that if we put our mind towards something and keep working hard towards it, we can accomplish it no matter how hard we try! I believe that affirming that one can, and to keep working towards it will always yield one the best results, no matter how many times one fails. I can also completely relate to your worry regarding your future, and might I say, I've found myself on the same boat as you, haha!
I can understand the struggle, concern and pressure the comes with being a full time student plus having a job! I'm a full time student here, this is my first semester here and I'm still trying to get the hang of things, since everything is new to me. However, I still devote time to a non profit children's organization where I did a virtual (WFH) internship. I barely find any time for myself, or any form of de-stressing activities. I can just hope that after four years, all this labor yields me something beautiful and worth the effort.
Anyway, it was lovely getting to know you! I'm always here if you want to talk!
    Have a great semester,
    Sarah.

  2. Hope you're doing well Mary, nice to meet you! I think most of us can relate to the point that you made in the 4th paragraph. What you want to be when you grow up seems a lot more obvious when you're younger but later on you begin to be a lot more skeptical and think more deeply about it. "Is this what I really want to do or am I just under someone else's influence? Is this even realistic? Is there high demand for it?" Reality is often disappointing.

While it may seem contradictory, I also agree with what you said regarding working towards goals. Having high confidence and a positive attitude can make a big difference, even when it seems unrealistic.

Being a college student is very time consuming, stressful, and at times mentally draining but I know you can do it. We're in this together!

    Have a nice day!

  3. Hey Mary! I love your post. You really made me think about my relationship with my mom because we've gone through so much and my mom is awesome and I love her but she's so different and sometimes a little hard to figure out but thats also understandable because she was a single mother and had to push past many things and just work hard for her family. So thanks because I needed that. Anyway, I want to be a PA as-well! Ive done some shadowing through my high school program because it was a health science high school and it focused on just showing us a lot of careers within the medical field. The reason I want to be a PA is because they have a flexible schedule so In the future I will be able to have a decent amount of family time hopefully and they also get to practice what they love and work directly with patients and do almost the exact same things as doctors. My point is that if you want it, then give it your all and go for it! Surround yourself with friends and people that have the same goals and can help you keep yourself focused on your goals. Id be up for it:)

  4. Your post was very well written it gave a honest look into your life, I really like that you have used your free time to develop a new skill, and I agree with you on the importance of having a productive mindset in order to accomplish your goals and also looking into the practicality of your goals before you sacrifice time and effort to it. It is very important to have a good plan now for the rest of your life. If you are having trouble making these important decisions I suggest asking your family for advice that is one of the most useful things about family is the devotion to help in difficult situations and sharing knowledge from generation to generation. Well anyway keep working hard and doing your best, I wish you the best with your education and look forward to reading more of your posts in the future of this class.
